Heidrich-Verge-Depre Take Down Brazil to Advance to the Semifinals

Anouk Verge-Depre and Joana Heidrich of Switzerland defeated Brazil's Rebecca Silva and Ana Patricia Silva Ramos to advance to the semifinals of the women's beach volleyball tournament at the Tokyo Olympics.

The Swiss duo won in straight sets, 21-18, 21-15, in a match that lasted just over an hour. Verge-Depre and Heidrich were dominant from the start, taking an early lead in both sets and never relinquishing it. They converted on three of their four break points in the first set and two of their three break points in the second set to secure the victory.

Silva and Ramos, who are the defending Olympic champions, were unable to find their rhythm against the Swiss pair. They were shaky on serve receive and struggled to get their offense going. They also committed a number of unforced errors, which proved costly.

Verge-Depre and Heidrich will face the winner of the match between Australia's Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho del Solar and Canada's Heather Bansley and Brandie Wilkerson in the semifinals. The semifinals will be played on August 5.

Conclusion

Verge-Depre and Heidrich's victory is a major upset and a testament to their skill and determination. They are now one step closer to winning an Olympic medal, and they will be a force to be reckoned with in the semifinals.
